Five fishermen held for ransom in the Sundarbans were rescued alive in an overnight operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard said on Tuesday, 27 October. The force said its personnel exchanged fire with the Dada Bhai gang before the hostage-takers fled into the forest.

Dhaka Tribune reported that the operation took place at Kanchir Khal, near the Arpangashia River in Satkhira's Shyamnagar upazila. Coast Guard media officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon announced the account on Tuesday afternoon. Star News National also reported the release of five fishermen, while Jamuna TV reported the gunfight and hostage rescue.

According to the account carried by Dhaka Tribune, Coast Guard teams from Koyra and Dobeki acted on a tip-off and began the operation around midnight. The force said the armed group opened fire when it detected the teams, and that personnel returned fire in self-defence. Those descriptions of the exchange come from the Coast Guard.

The group abandoned the hostages and escaped deeper into the forest, the force said. No arrests were made. A subsequent search recovered a single-barrel firearm, six spent cartridges and three locally made sharp weapons, according to the same report.

Two of the rescued men were from Shyamnagar in Satkhira and three from Koyra in Khulna, Dhaka Tribune reported. The Coast Guard's official announcement said arrangements to hand the men over to their families and take legal steps over the recovered items were under way.

The force released an official video combining patrol boats, movement through mangrove terrain and a press briefing. These are the force's released pictures; the briefing and patrol scenes do not independently establish the reported gunfight or show the moment each hostage was freed. The rescue and exchange-of-fire account remains attributed to the Coast Guard.
