Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Grameen Bank founder Dr Muhammad Yunus has received the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award. Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented it to him on Thursday at a ceremony in Gaston Hall at Georgetown University in Washington, according to a BSS report carried by Prothom Alo.
About 400 guests attended, including ambassadors from around 25 countries, entrepreneurs, teachers and researchers. The audience rose for a long standing ovation when his name was announced.
Four people were honoured this year: Dr Yunus, Reema Nanavaty of India's Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), fashion designer and Tory Burch Foundation founder Tory Burch, and Muna Sukhtian, board chair of Jordan's Microfund for Women.
Clinton said she had personally seen the work of Grameen Bank and how women had become self-reliant. Accepting the award, Dr Yunus called it a recognition of 50 years of work and said Grameen University would be launched by the end of this year.
