Bangladesh has called for overhauling the D-8 group of developing countries and making it more focused on results, as State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir pressed for closer economic cooperation among its members.

Kobir put the proposals to D-8 Secretary General Sohail Mahmood in Baghdad on Saturday, according to Bangladesh's foreign ministry. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.

The two discussed ways to expand trade and investment within the D-8, advance contract farming and introduce visa waiver arrangements between member states.

Kobir also suggested restructuring the organisation and giving its work a stronger focus on results, the foreign ministry said. He is leading Bangladesh's delegation to the OIC foreign ministers' meeting.

The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation brings together Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkiye. Azerbaijan joined in 2025.
