Harry Styles performed an unreleased song he wrote for his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on Friday night, marking the second anniversary of Payne's death at a sold-out Madison Square Garden show in New York.

Introducing the song, titled "What Is Enough", Styles told the crowd: "Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends." He said he felt "incredibly lucky" to play the venue and thanked the many people who had shaped his career.

"I'm sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven't. But really, it's just about looking after each other," he said, before adding: "I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right."

The acoustic ballad, performed during the encore, reflects on grief and memory. One line goes: "I could tell you what it's like to bury friends on a Wednesday night, gathered in the garden 'round a fire."

Payne, 31, died on 16 October 2024 after falling from the balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and Styles rose to fame together in One Direction, the group formed on The X Factor in 2010.

The tribute came during Styles' 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden, part of his 50-show "Together, Together" world tour supporting his fourth album, "Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally."
