Police have arrested the prime accused in the killing of a man who was beaten to death in Debhata upazila of Satkhira, in south-western Bangladesh, after a crowd accused him of insulting religion.

Amini is the main named accused in the murder case.

The victim, Wahiduzzaman Shameem, 38, was attacked on 13 October after an audio recording of a conversation between him and his wife spread on Facebook. Residents said the recording contained remarks that insulted religion, and anger built in the area.

According to Bangla Tribune, Shameem was beaten at a local market that day. The next afternoon he was dragged out of a village doctor's chamber and beaten again; police rescued him and admitted him to the upazila health complex. Shameem's elder brother, Abdul Jalil, filed a murder case at Debhata police station, naming 10 people, with Amini as the prime accused, and 200 to 250 unidentified people. Police earlier arrested two named suspects, Moktar Hossain Khan, 53, and Asadul Islam Molla, 46, and sent them to jail.

Shameem's family said he had long suffered from mental illness and that people in the area knew of his condition. He had graduated from Jagannath University and had also studied homoeopathy, and leaves a wife and two sons. Police said the investigation is continuing.
