At least 17 people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede outside a Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, West Bengal officials said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told reporters that a seven-year-old girl was among the dead and that six bodies had been identified so far.

Police said the crush happened in heavy crowds as devotees waited to see the pandal, a temporary pavilion housing an idol of the goddess Durga, during the festival. A senior police officer told the AFP news agency that an announcement during sudden rain caused "commotion", and that the waiting crowd began "pushing, pulling and rushing forward" and fell.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident "saddening" and said the state government was helping the affected families. His office announced compensation of 200,000 rupees (about $2,106) for each bereaved family and 50,000 rupees (about $527) for each of the injured.

Deadly crowd incidents are common at large religious gatherings in India. A stampede at the Kumbh Mela fair last year killed 30 people, and 121 people died in a crush at a Hindu religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh in 2024.
