US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Israel to take firm action against hardline settlers who attack Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, saying Washington is deeply concerned by the violence.

Rubio told reporters that the United States had asked the Israelis to act against the attacks and would keep pressing the point, Reuters reported. He spoke before boarding a flight to Uzbekistan.

His comments followed the wide circulation of video showing an attack on Heidi Levine, an American photojournalist for The Washington Post, during clashes between settlers and Palestinians on Friday. Levine and at least one other person were injured.

Rubio said the State Department was looking into the incident, and that he expected to have information from the US embassy in Jerusalem by Sunday.

In a separate incident in the West Bank, European diplomats and a French mayor were also attacked, according to Belgium's foreign minister.

The Israeli rights group Yesh Din says settlers have carried out at least 170 attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank since the annual olive harvest began on 27 September.
