A Jubo Dal leader was killed in an attack in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj late on Wednesday, police said, as investigators worked to establish a motive and identify those responsible.
Fakir Zahir Rahman, 40, was joint convener of the Araihazar upazila unit of the Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and president of the organisation's Kalapaharia Union unit. Mohammad Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, said Zahir was attacked around 10:00pm in the Char Kishoreganj area.
Zahir ran a pharmacy near Char Kishoreganj but lived in a rented house in Munshiganj Sadar upazila, across the district boundary. According to the police account, he had closed the pharmacy for the night and was on his way home, as he did each day, when one or more people attacked him with sharp weapons and left him injured beside the road.
Local residents rescued him and took him to a hospital in Munshiganj, where he died while being treated. Police said his body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The officer said no complaint had been filed by the family as of Thursday morning, and police had not announced any arrests.
The killing took place in a district that has seen repeated violence involving local political activists in recent months. Three days before Zahir's death, another Jubo Dal leader, Ripon Mia, 45, was killed in Rupganj upazila, also in Narayanganj. Police said Ripon's killing followed a dispute between supporters of Narayanganj-1 MP Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan and those of Kazi Moniruzzaman, a former president of the district BNP, which intensified over a waz mahfil guest list.
A murder case over Ripon's death named seven people and 30 to 40 unidentified others, and local BNP leaders called for prompt action. Police have not suggested that the two killings are connected, and no group has claimed responsibility for Zahir's death.
What lies behind Wednesday's attack is not yet known. Police have not said whether they suspect a political dispute, an earlier personal feud or a criminal motive, nor how many people took part. They have also not said whether they have identified any suspects or are examining CCTV footage.
Zahir's political work spanned two upazilas. His party role was in Araihazar, where he led the Kalapaharia Union unit, while his business and the attack were in Sonargaon. The Jubo Dal is the BNP's main youth organisation, and its local units are part of the party's wider network in the district.
The next step is the post-mortem examination, which may establish the cause of death and support a formal case. Investigators will also need statements from the family and from people in Char Kishoreganj who saw or heard the attack. Until a case is filed, the police account remains the only public record of what happened.
Sonargaon is a largely rural upazila in Narayanganj district, east of Dhaka. Sonargaon Police Station is leading the investigation. ScrollBeat will update this report when police release further details.
