Bangladesh will lease 25 government-owned water bodies for six years under a development project, the Land Ministry said after a committee meeting in Dhaka on Monday.

Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu chaired the 92nd meeting of the committee on leasing government water bodies at the ministry's conference room. The committee reviewed proposals for 34 water bodies — 11 in Moulvibazar, one in Rangpur, 19 in Sylhet and three in Kushtia — and approved 25 of them.

Minu said no irregularities would be tolerated in the leasing process and directed the authorities to ensure the highest level of transparency and accountability in managing the water bodies, known as jalmahals.

He said the open, online leasing system would give genuine fishers' cooperative associations a chance to take leases, which the government expects to raise fish production and strengthen revenue collection.

State Minister for Land Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, who attended as special guest, said priority had been given to making sure marginalised and genuine fishers could take part in the process without barriers.

Jalmahals are public water bodies leased out for fishing, and the ministry has been shifting applications and lease processing online in recent years.
