Five more children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8am on Monday, taking Bangladesh's combined confirmed and suspected measles death toll to 1,201 since 15 March.

The Directorate General of Health Services said 1,097 of the deaths were classified as suspected measles and 104 as laboratory-confirmed, according to its daily update.

Another 1,307 suspected cases were reported in the same 24-hour period, bringing the cumulative number of suspected infections to 214,551. Thirty-five new laboratory-confirmed cases took the confirmed total to 23,157.

Since 15 March, 190,663 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospital, the directorate said. Of them, 183,042 have recovered and been discharged.

The latest figures show the outbreak is still claiming lives nearly seven months after the first cases were recorded, despite emergency vaccination drives. Health officials classify most of the recent deaths as suspected measles because not every patient was tested.

The toll covers confirmed and suspected deaths reported to the health directorate from across the country since 15 March.
