Bangladesh has recorded 1,189 deaths linked to measles and measles-like symptoms since 15 March, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), as an outbreak that began in the spring continues into October.
The DGHS control room said three more people died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 17 October, taking deaths from those symptoms to 1,085. A further 104 people have died from confirmed measles, bringing the combined toll to 1,189.
The same data show 950 people were identified with measles-like symptoms during that 24-hour period and 85 with confirmed measles. Since 15 March, the DGHS has recorded 211,990 cases of measles-like symptoms and 23,057 confirmed infections. Of those admitted, 188,452 have been hospitalised and 180,848 have recovered and been discharged.
Sylhet division remains the worst-affected region. The divisional health office said two more children died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, taking the division's death toll this year to 195. It said 81 deaths were recorded in Sylhet district, 69 in Sunamganj, 30 in Habiganj and 15 in Moulvibazar.
About 447 patients with measles or measles-like symptoms were being treated at hospitals across the division, and 1,115 confirmed measles cases have been detected there since 1 January, the office said.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through coughing and sneezing and can be prevented with vaccination. Bangladesh's routine immunisation programme offers measles-rubella doses to children.
