Bangladesh has called on the United Nations Security Council to act to end Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, condemning the devastation in Gaza and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.

Ambassador Irene Khan, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, made the call during the Security Council's open debate on "The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question" in New York on Friday.

She said the council's deadlock "has enabled Israel to operate with impunity" and urged it to take decisive measures to halt annexation, forced displacement and human rights violations, and to ensure accountability under international law.

Khan reaffirmed Bangladesh's support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and called for uninterrupted humanitarian assistance, including full respect for the mandate of the UN relief agency UNRWA.

Turning to the wider region, she condemned Israeli attacks and occupation in Syria and Lebanon, called for an adequate United Nations presence in Lebanon and offered Bangladesh's support on that front.

She also condemned deadly Houthi attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia that caused civilian casualties, including among Bangladeshi migrant workers, and urged all parties to show restraint and protect civilians.
