Eighteen potters from across Bangladesh were honoured in Barishal on Saturday, 17 October, at the 17th Potters' Conference and Award Ceremony-2026, an event held to recognise the people who keep the country's traditional clay craft alive.

The programme was organised by Potters' Conference and Award Ceremony Barishal at a community centre in the city and began at noon with a drawing competition for children. The Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Lifetime Achievement Award went to veteran potter Niranjan Pal, from Monsurabad union in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district.

Engineer Moynul Abedin, the youngest son of the artist Zainul Abedin and a patron of the arts, inaugurated the event, the state news agency BSS reported. Barishal City Corporation Administrator Advocate Bilkis Akhtar Jahan Shirin attended as chief guest. Kalbela reported that the day's special guests included Major General (retd) Dr Monirul Islam Akhand, managing director of Summit Power, and Anu Tarek.

More than 150 potters from Barishal, Faridpur, Madaripur, Mymensingh, Tangail, Naogaon and Rajshahi joined the gathering, according to Kalbela. Traditional wares on display included earthen pots, Manasa ritual vessels, dolls, decorative jars and clay toys.

The potters welcomed the recognition but asked the government to take effective steps to protect the trade. Organisers said the conference, now in its 17th year, also helps introduce a younger generation to clay craftsmanship and a heritage that is fading.
