Police have filed a case over the fire that killed 10 tourists at the TupTup Resto and Resort near Inani Beach in Cox's Bazar, naming the resort's owner, Tanvir Ahmad, as the prime accused and detaining its manager.

Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder of Ukhiya police station said Sub-Inspector Ahsish Sutradhar filed the case on Saturday night. Four people were named as accused and 19 others were listed as unidentified accused, he said.

The manager, Mohammad Sumon, was detained on Saturday afternoon and formally arrested in the case. He was to be produced before a court on Sunday, the OC said, while police were searching for the other accused, including the owner.

The fire broke out at about 7:00am on Saturday at the three-storey wooden resort on the Patuartek beach stretch along Marine Drive. Ten people were killed. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

A five-member committee led by the additional district magistrate is investigating the fire. Police said DNA testing would be used to identify some of the victims, whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition, and that the bodies would be handed over to families once identities were confirmed.

The resort had been operating without a fire licence and without the required safety equipment, and had been warned in June about safety violations, officials have said. It also lacked environmental clearance.
