Seven more people died of dengue and 1,872 were admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh in the latest 24-hour reporting period, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The deaths take the national toll for 2026 to 342, and total infections to 110,312. About 5,771 patients were still being treated in hospitals, the health directorate said. Three of the latest deaths were in Dhaka city, three elsewhere in Dhaka division and one in Mymensingh division.

September was the deadliest month of the year so far, with 148 deaths and 43,774 admissions. Transmission has accelerated since: the DGHS logged 90 deaths in the first 16 days of October alone, and daily admissions have repeatedly passed 1,900.

Hospitals have come under mounting strain. In Chattogram, Chittagong Medical College Hospital recorded 1,288 cases in the first two weeks of October, with patients forced to take beds on the floor.

Medical entomologists expect the outbreak to persist. Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University has said transmission is likely to stay high through October, with many more people infected in November.

Dengue is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clean, standing water. Health officials again urged households to clear stagnant water around their homes and to seek medical care early if fever, severe headache or body ache develops.

Bangladesh has now recorded more than a decade of large dengue outbreaks. The worst on record was 2023, when 1,705 people died and 321,179 were hospitalised.
