Passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka can now watch their luggage being handled, from the moment bags leave an aircraft until they arrive on the collection belts.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (Caab) has installed 32 CCTV cameras and 18 monitors across eight baggage-belt areas. The 65-inch screens show live footage of bags being unloaded, moved to designated areas, sorted and placed on the belts for collection, according to the authority.
Caab said the system is meant to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability in baggage handling and to strengthen luggage security, and that it will keep expanding technology-based services so that domestic and international travellers, including migrant workers, can collect their bags without hassle.
The move follows a September instruction from Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, who ordered airport officials to cut baggage wait times and introduce live tracking after an unannounced inspection. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the ground handler at the airport, had earlier put body cameras on its baggage-handling staff.
