Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined 255 euros (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation after he left the national team camp in October following a rift with coach Jorge Jesus.

The federation's disciplinary council said it upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. Proceedings were opened on 9 October over facts reported two days earlier.

Ronaldo walked out of the squad after being an unused substitute in Portugal's Nations League match against Norway, then learning he would not start against Denmark on 1 October. He said Jesus had twice broken his word about his role. Jesus denied making any agreement and later left the door open for a return after Portugal's 2-1 win.

BBC Sport reported the ban takes effect from the day of the Denmark match, meaning Ronaldo has already served 19 days and will miss no Portugal matches. The Guardian noted the federation's statement did not say which games or activities the suspension covers, or whether time already served under a provisional suspension would count. Portugal next face Denmark on 14 November and Wales three days later.

The disciplinary committee said it took into account the remorse Ronaldo showed, his contributions to football and recognition of his athletic merit. Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and fans, accepted accountability and said he deserved to be punished. Federation president Pedro Proenca said there was a strong desire to have him back once the matter is resolved.

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both men's world records, and won Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. He plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
