Bangladesh and Iraq signed two memoranda of understanding in Baghdad on Saturday, including one providing mutual exemption from visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Hussein signed the documents on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The second agreement sets up a mechanism for regular political consultations between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

At the signing ceremony, the two ministers reiterated their commitment to strengthening friendly and cooperative ties and said the agreements would give fresh momentum to bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation. Bangladesh's ambassador to Iraq, Major General Md Maksudul Haque, was present.

The exemption covers diplomatic and official passports only, not ordinary passports held by most travellers.
