The government sent Tk 12 crore in incentives to 38,970 sugarcane farmers in the Rajshahi region on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman pressing a button to transfer the money to their mobile accounts.

The transfer took place at a public rally on the ground of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Government High School in Rajshahi city in the afternoon. The prime minister also handed cheques to 15 farmers at the event.

"Now I will press a button on the computer. Within a few minutes of pressing it, the government's assistance for you, sugarcane farmers, will reach your accounts, Insha Allah," he said before starting the transfer, according to the state news agency BSS.

He said the allocation was meant to support sugarcane cultivation in the region and help growers continue farming.

The rally was chaired by BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Thousands of party leaders and activists from different units in Rajshahi district attended, along with members of the Hindu community.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister visited a Durga Puja pavilion in Rangpur. He was scheduled to visit another puja venue in Rajshahi and then travel to Chattogram before returning to Dhaka at night.
