At least 17 people were killed and dozens were injured in a stampede at a busy Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata on Saturday evening, when heavy crowds and rain triggered a rush near an exit gate.

Kolkata Police said the crush happened at about 7:40 pm at the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chorbagan) pandal, under the Girish Park police station, 'due to heavy crowds of pandal hoppers amid rainfall'. The pandal was closed to visitors after the incident.

The death toll was given as at least 17 by The Daily Star, citing NDTV, while Hindustan Times, quoting a senior police official, reported 18 dead. Indian media said the figure could rise. Around 35 injured people were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where the state's chief minister and health minister later visited them.

Reporting from the scene described a sudden surge as it began to rain: crowds waiting outside the pandal rushed forward and some people fell on the road, triggering the crush, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, citing police.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and chief secretary Manoj Agarwal visited the injured at the hospital. Governor RN Ravi said he was heartbroken and offered condolences to the families, and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was 'deeply shocked and saddened' by the deaths at the Chorbagan pandal.

As a precaution, police stopped visitors from entering several other major pandals. The state government opened a helpline on 18003455678 and Kolkata Police opened another on 03322141310.

Durga Puja is the biggest festival in West Bengal, drawing huge crowds to hundreds of decorated pandals each autumn. The festival is also being celebrated across Bangladesh this week.
