Dr Nahreen Islam Khan, a professor at Jahangirnagar University, has been appointed chief information commissioner, becoming the first woman to head Bangladesh's Information Commission.

The President appointed her under Section 15(1) of the Right to Information Act, 2009, according to two notifications issued by the Press-2 branch of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday, 17 October. Deputy Secretary Khadiza Tahera Boby signed the notifications.

The same notifications named two journalists, S A M Mahfuzur Rahman and Khan Mohammad Abul Hossain, as information commissioners. The commission has three members: a chief information commissioner and two commissioners.

Dr Khan teaches in the Department of Geography and Environment at Jahangirnagar University. The Information Commission is the statutory body that oversees the Right to Information Act and hears complaints and appeals when a public authority refuses to release information.

The notifications said the government would determine the rank, remuneration, allowances and other benefits of the chief information commissioner and the information commissioners.
