Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by 99 runs in the opening match of the UAE ODI Tri-Series at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, handing stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy a defeat in his first match in charge.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza chose to bat and saw his side slide to 24 for three inside seven overs, as Taskin Ahmed removed openers Brian Bennett and Ben Curran and then wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga.

Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine rebuilt the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 150. Taylor made 81 from 101 balls, passing Andy Flower's 6,786 runs to become Zimbabwe's leading one-day international run-scorer, and closed the match on 6,837. Ervine went on to make 93 from 106 balls. Late hitting from Newman Nyamhuri and Wellington Masakadza, both unbeaten on 21, lifted Zimbabwe to 271 for eight.

Taskin finished with three wickets for 44 runs, while Saif Hassan and Shoriful Islam took two wickets each.

Bangladesh's reply began well, with Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar adding 47 for the first wicket, but the innings unravelled. Brad Evans took four wickets for 45 runs, and both Raza and Masakadza struck twice. Tanzid top-scored with 46 and Saif made 26, but Bangladesh were all out for 172 in 33.4 overs. Ervine was named player of the match.

Bangladesh were without regular captain Litton Das, ruled out of the series with a right hip injury. They next face Afghanistan in the tri-series on 21 October.
