Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain to step down from the cabinet, according to multiple government sources, a day after the minister was seen leading an armed anti-drug drive in the capital.

The prime minister summoned Ishraque Hossain after a cabinet meeting at the secretariat on Sunday, 18 October, and told him to resign, the sources said. No senior government official had issued a formal statement on the matter by Monday morning.

The move followed an incident on Saturday, when Ishraque Hossain, who is also the member of parliament for Dhaka-6, went to the Dayaganj area near Gendaria railway station with armed bodyguards. Video posted on his own Facebook page showed him raising a pistol as he shouted instructions, and one person in the group threatening to shoot. Several men were chased, one was kicked, and six people were later handed over to the police.

The footage spread widely on social media and drew criticism from within the BNP and the government. A Dhaka Metropolitan Police official said the Wari zone deputy commissioner had been asked to investigate whether any law was broken, and that action would follow if a violation was found. Under the Home Ministry's 2025 firearms policy, a licensed weapon may be carried for self-defence but must not be displayed in a way that frightens or annoys others.

Ishraque Hossain has said his firearm is legal and that he raised it briefly in self-defence after 30 to 35 people advanced aggressively towards his convoy. He said four or five temporary drug dens were removed and that the drive would continue.

The minister's office first dismissed the resignation report as false. In a post after midnight, Ishraque Hossain said any instruction from the prime minister to a cabinet member is carried out automatically on receipt, and that he would hold a press conference once such a decision took effect. He did not say directly whether he had resigned.

His departure would follow that of BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Misti, who resigned on 1 October after several people linked to her were named in an attack on a health centre in Dhaka's Mirpur.
