US President Donald Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, a little over a week before Israel votes on 27 October.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: "Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself." He described Netanyahu as a "Great Warrior Prime Minister" and "an even greater Partner for Peace in combatting the Islamic Republic of Iran".
He added: "Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel. BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!"
Netanyahu responded on X: "Thank you, President Trump, for your tremendous support and for our work together. Together we will complete the mission!"
Rival candidate and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, speaking in Tel Aviv, said he "admires" Trump but that "Israel is a democratic country: only Israelis can choose their leader", according to the AFP news agency.
The election comes amid heightened regional tension. The United States and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran on 28 February, and the confrontation has remained live, with Trump repeating his threat against Tehran in the same post.
