A 41-year-old man was beaten to death at a public hospital in Dhaka late on Wednesday after relatives of child patients suspected him of trying to abduct a child, police said. Md Alam Sheikh, who was from Natore district, died in the early hours of Thursday at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, according to police.

Inspector (Operations) Masud Rana of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station said Alam had been wandering in front of the hospital's paediatric ward around 11:00pm. Relatives of children being treated there grew suspicious and questioned him. When his answers did not satisfy them, several people dragged him downstairs and beat him severely, the officer said.

Police recovered the body and, after preparing an inquest report, sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon division said officers had been alerted through the national emergency service 999, and that Alam's identity was later confirmed through fingerprint verification.

One person has been detained in connection with the attack. Mizan said Alam's family had been contacted and was travelling to Dhaka, and that legal action would be taken if the family filed a complaint with police. The reports did not say what role the detained person is suspected to have played.

Several central questions remain unanswered. Police have not said whether any child had been reported missing from the ward, what specific evidence prompted the suspicion, how many people took part in the beating, or whether the hospital's security cameras captured the attack. The reports contained no account of a child being taken, and police have not said they found evidence linking Alam to an abduction.

The hospital is a government tertiary-care institution in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, and its paediatric ward was treating children at the time. Police said the attack happened in front of that ward, in a part of the hospital where relatives of young patients were present at night.

The killing follows other fatal mob attacks over similar suspicions in Bangladesh. On 18 August this year, Raju Sikder was beaten to death in the Rayer Mahal area of Khulna after locals suspected him of abducting a child; police said he had been taking a child with him when the suspicion arose. In 2019, eight people were killed in mob attacks across the country after false rumours about child abductions spread online, and the police chief at the time said none of the victims had been involved in abduction.

The autopsy is expected to establish the medical cause of death. Police will also record a statement from Alam's family, and a criminal case could follow if they file a complaint. Investigators have not announced a timetable, and they have not said whether they are looking for other people who joined the attack.

The hospital administration did not issue a public comment in the reports on the killing. It is also not known whether anyone alerted hospital staff or police before the crowd began beating Alam, or what checks were made before the group decided he was a threat.

For Alam's family, the immediate task is to collect the body after legal formalities. For the police, the case turns on establishing who took part and why. For the hospital, the killing raises a narrower question that the reports leave open: how a man could be beaten to death on the premises of a busy public hospital at night without being stopped.
